主题:Modern Pandemic Crises and Default Risk
内容:This paper investigates whether the modern health pandemic crisis weakens financial stability. Specifically, it analyzes the annual data of 286,339 companies from 44 countries (or regions) during five modern epidemic crises, namely, SARS (2003), H1N1 (2009), MERS (2012), Ebola (2014), and Zika (2016), and observes that the pandemic crisis significantly increases the default risk of enterprises. Further analysis indicates that a sound prevention and control system of finance acts as a “booster” for intensifying the impact of the pandemic on financial stability. Although the informal institution acts as a “cushion” in the pandemic crisis, the more harmonious the religious and ethnic relationship, the less negative impact of the pandemic on financial stability. This paper contributes to the literature that estimates the impact of the COVID-19 on financial stability and excludes the problem of insufficient data available thus far for COVID-19. Besides, it discusses the state institution and indicates the heterogeneity of the impact of public health crises on the financial stability of countries with different formal and informal institutions, which thus provides new avenues for the improvement of the national financial institution and the joint pandemic control and prevention system around the world.
